dc.description.abstractBackground The family remains the main source of care for schizophrenic patients and has a major effect on their illness. Having people with schizophrenia in the family also influences roles and interactions in the family. Most caregivers are women. Caregivers are often described as forgotten patients. In caregivers of people with mental disorders, depression is more often reported. Mothers who care for schizophrenic patients are more likely to encounter problems than Dad . Aims To find out the correlation between the level of depression according to the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale - Depression subscale (HADS-D) with the age of the caregiver, the duration of illness and the age of first illness in the biological mother who take care of boys with schizophrenia. Methode This study is an analytical study with cross-sectional approach to see the correlation between depression level according to the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale - Depression subscale (HADS-D) with caregiver age, duration of illness and age of first illness in biological mothers who takes care of boys with schizophrenia in in Prof. dr. M. Ildrem Mental Hospital Medan, with total sample 70 people. This study was done during April 2018 to June 2018. This study retrieve the sample using consecutive sampling. In this study, level of depression according to the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale-Depression subscale (HADS-D) consist of 4 part; Normal, Mild, Moderate and Severe. Result Demographic characteristics, the age of caregiver (years) ≥45 (91.4%),<45 (8,6%)median 54.5,range 42-60. Duration of illness (years) ≤5(58.6%),>5 (41.4%)median 4,range 2-20. Age of first illness (years) ≥20(62.9%),<20 (37.1%)mean 21.61±4.288. Family Income per Month(million rupiah);median 2,range 1-4.5. Duration of Care for Patients(years);median 4,range 2-20. Time spent caring for patients per week(hours);median 14,range 14-28. Number of children;median 3,range 2-5. Duration of caregiver education(years);median 10.5,range 9-16. the age of patient (years);27.56±5.109. PANSS Score;median 65,range 60-76. Duration of patient education(years);median 12,range 6-16. Number of hospitalizations;median 2,range 1-5,There were no statistically significant between the depression level according to the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale - Depression subscale (HADS-D) with duration of illness (p = 0.770) and age of first illness (p = 0.084) in biological mothers who take care of boys with schizophrenia. There was a statistically significant between the level of depression according to the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale - Depression subscale (HADS-D) with caregiver age (p = 0.017, odds ratio=12,566, 95% CI 2,344-67,289) in biological mothers who take care of boys with schizophrenia. Conclusion Possibility (odds) is found that the age of caregiver <45 years old is more likely to have depression level according to the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale - Depression subscale (HADS-D) 12.566 worse compared to the age of caregiver ≥45 years old.en_US
