| dc.description.abstract | Air pollution is a public health problem that can result in health problems in
humans, especially respiratory disorders. Street vendors are one of the people who
are vulnerable to respiratory complaints due to exposure to air pollution from
vehicle smoke, dust and other environmental pollution. Street vendors can work for
approximately 8 hours/day. In addition, other factors that affect respiratory
complaints are worker characteristics (age, gender, length of exposure, and
working period) and worker behavior (smoking behavior and use of PPE). Based
on a preliminary survey, out of 10 street vendors, 60% experienced respiratory
complaints such as coughing, sneezing, and sore throat. This study aims to
determine the relationship between characteristics and behavior with respiratory
complaints in street vendors on Jalan Dr Mansyur Medan in 2024. This study uses
analytical research with a cross sectional approach. The sample in this study was
39 people and the sampling technique used total sampling. Based on the chi square
statistical test, there are variables related to respiratory complaints, namely gender
(p=0.001) and smoking behavior (p=<0.001). Meanwhile, those that are not related
are age (p=0.442), length of exposure (p=0.277), working period (p=0.170), and
use of PPE (p=1.000). The advice given to street vendors is to use PPE in the form
of masks, participate in socialization programs related to potential health risks from
exposure to pollutants, pay attention to working hours, and conduct regular health
