Factors Associated Sleep Disorder in Children with Epilepsy at Haji Adam Malik Hospital Medan

Background: Sleep disorder are a collection of conditions that involve disturbances in the amount, quality or timing of sleep in children. Sleep disorder are increased in children with chronic illnesses such as epilepsy.
Objective: To analyze the factors that associated sleep disorder in children with epilepsy at Haji Adam Malik General Hospital, Medan.
Method: Analytical research with cross sectional design to analyze factors that influence sleep disorder in children with epilepsy at Haji Adam Malik General Hospital in Medan during February to June 2024. Data collection was carried out using the Children's Sleep Habit Questionnaire (CSHQ) questionnaire. Univariate analysis was carried out to see the frequency distribution of respondents, bivariate analysis to determine the influence of age, gender, type of seizure, history of seizures, number of Anti-Epileptic Drugs (AED), and type of AED to sleep disturbances in children with epilepsy with the Chi Square test.
Results: There was a prevalence of sleep disorder in children with epilepsy (53.1%), mostly occurred in children with male characteristics (32.7%), generalized seizure type (42.9%), type of epilepsy treatment with valproic acid (18.4%), the number of anti-epileptic drug use was polytherapy (32.7%). Chi Square test results showed that the factors that influence sleep disturbances in children with epilepsy are seizure history (p=0.000), number of AED (p=0.000), and type of AED (p=0.010) with p value <0.05.
Conclusion: Factors that are at risk for sleep disorder in children with epilepsy are seizure history, number of AED, and type of AED.
