dc.description.abstract | Indonesia is among the top 10 countries with the highest prevalence of diabetes mellitus
type II with the sharpest increase. Most of it can not diagnosed until have symptoms
related to severe hyperglycemia. The most common symptom is mobility caused by
gingival inflammation, it is can affect their nutrition, 95,5% of people in Indonesia admit
that they have never been to the dentist for a year and most of them still use plants as
medicine. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of binahong leaf water extract in
reducing gingival inflammation on diabetes mellitus type II (DMTII) patients by reducing
IL-17 levels and gingival index (GI).This research is a true experimental with pretestposttest
control group design. The treatment was to provide binahong leaf extract
mouthwash for seven days, gargled twice a day. 30 subjects were divided into five groups,
2 control groups (KN and KP) and 3 treatment groups who were given extract mouthwash
with three different concentrations 12,5%, 25%, and 50% (EAB12,5, EAB25, and
EAB50) then calculated the differences IL-17 levels and GI scores before and after
treatment. IL-17 indicator taken from the subject's saliva and analyzed using ELISA. GI
scores was evaluated for all teeth except third molars. There was no significant reduction
on gingival inflammation in DMTII patients as calculated from the differences IL-17
levels before and after treatment (p=0,88). There was a significant difference in GI scores
before and after treatment (p=0,04), the most significant reduction on gingival
inflammation was in the EAB25 group compared with KN (p=0,02). This research proves
that administration of binahong leaf water extract mouth rinses shows a reduction in
gingival inflammation in DMTII patients as seen from the reduction in IL-17 levels and
GI scores after treatment with binahong leaf water extract with three different
concentrations. | en_US |
