dc.description.abstractWildings matoa (Pometia pinnata) are abundant in Arboretum Bekala, Universitas Sumatera Utara. Matoa seeds are recalcitrant. Wildlings are an alternative to provide seedlings. Proper transplanting techniques are needed to produce healthy and good-quality seedlings. This study aims to determine the appropriate transplanting technique to deliver the best growth of seedlings, with practical implications for the cultivation of Matoa wildlings. Bare-root and root-ball are well-known techniques for transplanting wildlings. Matoa wildlings are selected based on the following criteria: no more than 30 cm tall, straight trunk, 3 - 5 leaves, and free from pests and diseases. The research design used was a completely randomized design with four treatments of wildlings transplanting techniques, namely bare-root, 5 cm radius root-ball, 10 cm radius root-ball, and 15 cm radius root-ball. The observation parameters were the percentage of survival, height increase, diameter increase, number of leaves and seedling sturdiness. The results showed that the transplanting technique of matoa wildlings had a significant effect on height gain and diameter gain. The 15 cm radius root-ball transplantation was the best technique for transplanting wildlings with the best results in terms of height and diameter gain. The whole technique of root ball showed a 100% survival percentage, while the bare-root technique showed a 93.3% survival percentage. The optimum value of matoa seedling sturdiness is 8; the lowest seedling sturdiness value is found in the 15 cm radius root ball, which is 8.28 and the highest seedling sturdiness value is found in the bare root technique, which is 8.70.en_US
