Aging is a process of free radicals accumulation which form in normal metabolism and results in cell damage. Increasing age causes cell mutations and degenerative diseases. Malondialdehyde (MDA) is a product of lipid peroxidation and a marker of free radicals in the body. Antioxidants prevent aging by inhibiting molecular oxidation and cell membrane damage. Superoxide dismutase (Sod) is an important antioxidant against oxidative stress. Sod catalyzes the dismutation of free radicals 02− into O2 and H2O2. The Sod activity decreases with age. Gambier leaves catechins have antioxidants potential and may protect cell membranes from free radicals. This study aims to determine the effect of gambier leaves catechins on serum MDA level and the expression of the hippocampal Sod2 in female mice aging model induced by d-galactose administration. This is in vivo experimental study with posttest only with control group design. The samples size were 18 female mice, divided into 4 groups namely P0, P1, P2, and P3. Each group was injected 150 mg/kgBW d-galactose intraperitoneally. P1, P2, and P3 were given orally 100, 200, and 400 mg/kgBW gambier leaves catechins, respectively. Serum MDA levels decreased significantly in the P2 group (p = 0.014) and P3 group (p = 0.016). Gambier leaves catechins at doses of 100, 200 and 400 mg/kgBW decreased the expression of hippocampal Sod2. Conclusion: Gambier leaves catechins decreased serum MDA levels in female mice aging model induced by d-galactose at an optimal dose of 200mg/kgBW but did not increase the relative expression of Sod2 in the hippocampus.en_US
