Background : Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and malnutrition are interrelated. Malnutrition causes further immune deficiency and accelerates disease progression. However, there have been few studies analyzing the relationship between children's nutritional status and immunodeficiency status in HIV infected children, especially in Indonesia.
Objective : To determine the relationship between nutritional status and immunodeficiency status in HIV infected pediatric patients at Adam Malik Hospital.
Method : This study is an analytical study with a cross sectional approach conducted at the Pediatric Allergy Immunology polyclinic at Adam Malik Hospital Medan in May 2024. Children's nutritional status and CD4 and HIV RNA examination results were collected. The Chi square test was used to determine the relationship between nutritional status and immunodeficiency status. And used to determine the relationship between HIV RNA and immunodeficiency status.
Results : This study involved 67 children infected with HIV, among which 29 children were found to have HIV RNA. There was a significant relationship between nutritional status based on weight/height (p<0.001) and HIV RNA (p<0.001) with immunodeficiency status in children with HIV
Conclusion : There is a relationship between nutritional status and immunodeficiency status in children with HIV, so nutritional intervention is needed to reduce HIV related morbidity and mortality in children.
