Background: The incidence of bacterial or fungal infections is common in patients with viral respiratory tract infections but the prevalence of bacterial or fungal infections in patients infected with SARS-CoV-2 virus is still not well understood.
Methods: Retrospective observational descriptive research with a cross sectional design, taking data on adult patients (>18 years) with confirmed COVID-19 who were admitted to H.Adam Malik Medan Hospital in the time period from June 2020 to September 2021 who underwent sputum culture examination.
Results: A total population of 100 COVID-19 patients was studied, with bacterial infections in 26 patients (26%), fungi in 5 patients (5%), bacteria and fungi in 5 patients (5%). The most common bacterial pathogen was Acinetobacter baumanii 14(46.7%) followed by Klebsiella pneumonia 5(16.7%), Pseudomonas aeruginosa 5(16.7%) and Eschericia coli 3(10%). The most sensitive antibiotic in the most bacterial germs was amikacin 8(57.14%) and resistant to ceftazidime, ceftriaxone, ciprofloxacine, gentamicin and piperacillin with each resistance value of 11(78.57%), the most fungal Candida albicans 5(50%) and most sensitive to fluconazole, voriconazole, caspofungin, ampothericin B, micafungin and flucytosine 3(60%).
Conclusion: Bacterial and fungal infections can occur in COVID-19 where the data on germ patterns and sensitivity tests in this study can be the basis for administering antibiotics empiric in hospitals.
