Formulation and Evaluation of Peel-Off Gel Mask Extract of Senggani Leaves (Melastoma malabathricum L.) as Anti-Aging
Abstract
Background: Senggani leaves contained flavonoids that had the ability to be antioxidants. The peel-off gel mask was a cosmetic facial treatment that was easy to use, hydrated the skin, and gave a cool feeling to the skin.
Objective: To formulate senggani leaf extract (Melastoma malabathricum L.) in a stable peel-off gel mask preparation and evaluate its effectiveness as anti-aging.
Method: This study was conducted by making extracts of senggani leaves by maceration process used 96% ethanol. Simplisia and extracts were tested for characterization and phytochemical screening. Extracts were formulated in peel-off gel mask preparations each with a concentration of 4% (F1), 5% (F2), 6% (F3) and without senggani leaf extract (F0). Evaluation of peel-off gel mask preparation included homogeneity tested, dried timed, spreadability, pH, viscosity, stability, volunteer irritation tested and anti-aging effectiveness test using skin analyzer tool with parameters namely moisture, spot, pores, and wrinkles carried out for 4 weeks.
Results: The results of the characterization of senggani leaf simplisia obtained moisture content of 8.65%, watered soluble juice content of 18.58%, ethanol soluble juice content of 18.31%, total ash content of 3.82%, acid insoluble ash content of 0.69%. The results of the characterization of senggani leaf extract obtained moisture content of 7.32%, total ash content of 3.97%, acid insoluble ash content of 0.8%. Simplisia and senggani leaf extract contained alkaloids, flavonoids, glycosides, saponins, tannins, steroids. The result peel-off gel mask preparation was homogeneous, the preparation timed dried 20.3-22.3 minutes, the spreadability is 5.1-6 cm, the pH valued is 4.90-6.49, the viscosity valued is 5386.33-10388.03 cPs, stable during 12 weeks storage at room temperature. The 6% concentration peel-off gel mask preparation had better effectiveness than 0%, 4%, 5%, and 6% which obtained an average percent recovery of watered content of 28.73%, pores 27.88%, stains 22.12%, and wrinkles 19.62%.
Conclusion: Senggani leaf extract could have formulated in a peel-off gel mask preparation and met the preparation evaluation requirements and had the best anti-aging effectiveness at a concentration of 6%.
