dc.description.abstractBackground. In 2022, the number of internet users in Indonesia reached 73.7% of the total population. The convenience provided by the internet has the potential addiction effect for its users. Chronic internet addiction can cause deterioration in various aspects of sleep quality which will then have a further impact on psychological condition and can cause depression. Objective. To analyze the mediating effect of sleep quality on the relationship between internet addiction and depression among medical students of Universitas Sumatera Utara. Method. This study used an analytical approach with a cross sectional method and medical students of Universitas Sumatera Utara who were selected through consecutive sampling as the sample. The instruments that used in this study were in the form of questionnaires distributed via Google Form include assessing internet addiction with the Internet Addiction Test (IAT), sleep quality with the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), and depression with the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9). Results. Statistical analysis of 300 respondents showed that there was a significant relationship between internet addiction and depression, internet addiction and sleep quality, sleep quality and depression (p < 0.001). Mediation analysis showed that sleep quality mediated 37.13% of the relationship between internet addiction and depression. Conclusion. Increased in severity of internet addiction causes depression to worsen through worsening of sleep quality. The findings of this study emphasize the importance of monitoring internet usage and optimizing sleep quality to reduce the risk for depression in medical students.en_US
