Hubungan Tingkat Pengetahuan dengan Perilaku Pencegahan Fraktur pada Mahasiswa Fakultas Kedokteran Universitas Sumatera Utara
Relationship Between Level of Knowledge and Fracture Prevention of Students in Faculty of Medicine in University of North Sumatra
Abstract
Introduction: Fractures can have detrimental physical, psychological, and social
impacts, affecting an individual’s quality of life. For medical students, understanding
fracture prevention is essential as they prepare for healthcare roles. Examining the
relationship between knowledge and preventive behavior in this group can highlight
educational areas needing improvement. Objective: This study aims to analyze the
relationship between knowledge level and fracture prevention behavior among medical
students at Universitas Sumatera Utara. Method: A cross-sectional analytic study was
conducted with 89 students meeting inclusion and exclusion criteria, selected through
simple random sampling. Data were gathered using a validated and reliable
questionnaire assessing knowledge and prevention behaviors. Chi-square tests
evaluated the relationship between knowledge levels and prevention behaviors.
Results: Of the participants, 68 students (76.4%) were found to have a good level of
knowledge, while 21 students (23.6%) had an adequate level. In terms of fracture
prevention behaviors, 26 students (29.2%) exhibited poor prevention behavior, 46
students (51.7%) displayed adequate prevention behavior, and 17 students (19.1%)
showed good prevention behavior. A significant correlation was found between
knowledge and preventive behaviors (p = 0.017), indicating that higher knowledge is
associated with better prevention practices. Discussion: Findings suggest that
enhancing knowledge positively influences fracture prevention behavior among
medical students. Integrating comprehensive education on fracture risks and
prevention strategies may improve students’ readiness for clinical practice.
Conclusion: There is a significant relationship between knowledge levels and fracture
prevention behavior in medical students, emphasizing the importance of educational
interventions focused on fracture prevention.
