Characteristics of Glaucoma Patients at Prof. Dr. Chairuddin Panusunan Lubis Hospital in 2023
Abstract
Background: Glaucoma is a disease characterized by progressive degeneration of the optic nerve. Objective: To identify and describe the characteristics of glaucoma patients at Prof. Dr. Chairuddin Panusunan Lubis Hospital in 2023. Methods: This study used a cross-sectional design with total sampling, involving 86 samples based on medical record data. Data analysis was conducted using SPSS. Results: The majority of glaucoma patients were aged 40-60 years, totaling 42 individuals (48.8%). Females were the predominant gender, with 46 individuals (53.5%). The most frequent diagnosis was Normotension Glaucoma, affecting 37 individuals (43%). The main complaint was blurred vision, reported by 61 individuals (70.9%). Bilateral complaint location was most common, found in 64 individuals (74.4%). Blood pressure was primarily classified as stage 1 hypertension, with 28 individuals (32.6%). Intraocular pressure was within the normal range in 55 individuals (64%) in the right eye and 61 individuals (70.9%) in the left eye. Visual acuity mostly indicated mild impairment for 34 individuals (39.5%) in the right eye and 43 individuals (50%) in the left eye. Hypertension was the most common comorbidity, affecting 40 individuals (46.5%). Non-surgical treatment was predominant, applied in 84 individuals (97.7%). Conclusion: Glaucoma patients at Prof. Dr. Chairuddin Panusunan Lubis Hospital in 2023 were predominantly women aged 40-60 with a diagnosis of Normotension Glaucoma. Most patients reported blurred vision with normal intraocular pressure, while hypertension was also frequently observed. This suggests that additional factors may contribute to the development of glaucoma, indicating the need for further research in the future.
