Abstract
Background. Chronic tonsillitis is a prolonged or recurrent inflammation of the tonsils. Symptoms in chronic tonsillitis patients may include persistent chronic sore throat, bad breath, persistent lymph node enlargement, enlarged tonsils with irregular surfaces, enlarged crypts, and the presence of detritus. Aims. This research aims to analyze the characteristics of chronic tonsillitis patients at Rumah Sakit Prof. dr. Chairuddin Panusunan Lubis Universitas Sumatera Utara, during the period 2019-2023. Methods. This study uses a descriptive method with a cross-sectional approach, where data were obtained from the medical records of patients who met inclusion and exclusion criteria, with a total of 73 randomly selected samples. Results. The study shows that the majority of patients were in the age range of 17-25 years (47.9%), with a gender distribution of 50.7% male and 49.3% female. Additionally, most patients had a high school education (37.0%), were unmarried (84.9%), and unemployed (74.0%). Most patients had tonsil sizes classified as T3/T3 (52.1%) and presented with main complaints of difficulty swallowing or throat discomfort (86.3%). Conclusion. This research provides an overview of the characteristics of chronic tonsillitis patients at Rumah Sakit Prof. dr. Chairuddin Panusunan Lubis Universitas Sumatera Utara.
