Introduction. Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a chronic metabolic disease that occurs when the pancreas cannot produce enough insulin or when the body cannot efficiently use the insulin produced, leading to an increase in blood glucose levels. Obesity, one of the main risk factors for diabetes, can be assessed through the calculation of body mass index (BMI). The American Diabetes Association recommends using HbA1c as one of the diagnostic criteria for diabetes. HbA1c measurement can be used to diagnose and assist in assessing the effectiveness of a treatment plan by providing an average plasma glucose level over the previous eight to twelve weeks. Objective. To determine the relationship between BMI and HbA1c levels in patients with type 2 DM. Methods. This study uses an observational analytic study design with a cross-sectional approach. The sample was selected using random sampling techniques with 100 medical record samples of type 2 diabetes mellitus patients at Haji Adam Malik General Hospital in Medan. Results. There is no significant relationship between HbA1c and body mass index (p= 0.221). Conclusion. There is no relationship between body mass index and HbA1c levels in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients at Haji Adam Malik General Hospital in Medan.en_US
