dc.description.abstractBackground Speech and language disorders are often considered to be closely related to parenting style. Parenting style can be defined as parents interact, educate and care for their children consistently over time. The relationship between parenting styles and the incidence of speech and language disorders has never been studied at Prof. Dr. Chairuddin P. Lubis University of North Sumatera Hospital. Objective To determine the relationship between parenting styles and the incidence of speech and language disorders in children aged 2-6 years at Prof. Dr. Chairuddin P. Lubis University of North Sumatera Hospital. Method This research uses an analytical design with a cross-sectional approach. The total sample was 60 people taken by non-probability sampling using consecutive sampling techniques. This research used Parenting Styles and Dimensions Questionnaire (PSDQ) to determined types of parenting style. Results Speech and language disorders were more common in boys (80%), aged 24-35 months (45%), first born children (58.3%), and screen time < 3 hours (61.7%). Parents of children with speech and language disorders are mostly aged 19-44 years (95%), have secondary education (48.3%), do not work (56.7%), income < minimum wage (3,769,082) (70%), and have > 1 child (63.3%). The parenting style most often applied by respondents is democratic parenting (60%). The results of the analysis using the Spearman Rank test showed a p value > 0.05, namely 0.558. Conclusion There is no significant relationship between parenting styles and the incidence of speech and language disorders.en_US
