Background. The high incidence of depression among medical students has become a growing concern in society. Depression refers to a mental health disorder characterized by feelings of sadness, sleep disturbances, difficulty concentrating, and loss of interest. One factor that can help prevent depression is social support. The perception of available social support, known as perceived social support, plays a crucial role in maintaining positive emotional experiences under pressure. Therefore, research on perceived social support and depression among medical students is of significant importance. Objective. This study aims to analyze the relationship between perceived social support and depression levels among medical students of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Sumatera Utara, class of 2021-2023. Method. This study employs an analytical observational design with a cross-sectional approach. The study sample consisted of 90 medical students from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Sumatera Utara, class of 2021-2023, who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data were collected by distributing questionnaires in person using a QR code that linked to a Google Form containing the questionnaire. The variables measured included perceived social support, assessed using the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS), and depression levels, assessed using the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II). Results. Bivariate analysis using Spearman's Rank test showed a significant relationship between perceived social support and depression levels (p < 0.001). The correlation coefficient was found to be 0.528, indicating a strong negative relationship. Conclusion. There is a significant relationship between perceived social support and depression levels. These findings emphasize the importance of adequate social support as a preventive measure for depression.
