Hubungan Pemberian Kelasi Besi dengan Jumlah Ferritin pada Anak Penderita β-Thalassemia Mayor di RSUP Haji Adam Malik Medan Tahun 2021-2023
Relationship Between Iron Chelation Giving and Ferritin Levels in Children with β-Thalassemia Major at Haji Adam Malik Hospital Medan in 2021-2023
Abstract
Background: Children with β-Thalassemia major require lifelong blood transfusions to
maintain their survival. Iron chelation therapy is crucial as it acts as an agent that can
reduce serum ferritin levels. Therefore, adherence to iron chelation therapy must be
closely monitored. Objective: This study aims to determine the correlation between iron
chelation therapy and serum ferritin levels in children with β-Thalassemia major at RSUP
Haji Adam Malik Medan. Methods: This research is an observational analytical study
with a cross-sectional design. The study sample consisted of pediatric patients with β-
Thalassemia major at RSUP Haji Adam Malik Medan from 2021-2023, using a total
sampling technique. Results: Out of 50 patients, the majority of pediatric β-Thalassemia
major patients at RSUP Haji Adam Malik in 2021-2023 were aged 11-15 years (42%), the
highest number compared to other age groups. The use of iron chelation showed that
Deferiprone (52%) was more frequently administered than Deferasirox (48%). The results
of the correlation test using the Chi-Square test between ferritin levels before and after
iron chelation therapy showed a p-value > 0.05. Conclusion: There is no significant
correlation between the administration of iron chelation therapy and serum ferritin levels
in children with β-Thalassemia major at RSUP Haji Adam Malik Medan.
