Background. This study was used to identify the characteristics of patients with benign and malignant breast tumors, as well as factors that influence the diagnosis. Objective. This study aims to show the prevalence of benign and malignant breast tumors and their characteristics. Method. The study was conducted with a descriptive approach using secondary data from patient medical records at Prof. dr. Chairuddin P. Lubis Hospital, University of North Sumatra. Results. The study showed that benign breast tumors were mostly found in patients under 30 years of age, which was 60.6%. The most common type of benign breast tumor was fibroadenoma mammae, which reached 69.7%. Meanwhile, malignant breast tumors were more commonly found in patients aged 41-50 years (37.9%) and were dominated by the histopathological type of invasive carcinoma of no special type (80.3%). In addition, patients with malignant breast tumors tended to have positive LVI status (59.1%) and high histopathological grading grade III, which indicated the possibility of cancer cells spreading to other organs. Malignant breast tumor patients were mostly unemployed (65.2%) and married (83.3%), while benign breast tumors were more common in unmarried patients (60.6%). Most malignant breast tumor patients were postmenopausal (63.6%). In terms of histopathology, this study showed that malignant breast tumors generally had a histopathological type of invasive carcinoma of no special type (80.3%), with a high histopathological grade of grade III of 63.6%, and positive LVI status (59.1%). Conclusion. The results of this study can be used as health education about breast tumors and to strengthen early detection programs through routine examinations to reduce the incidence of breast cancer in advanced stages.en_US
