Background. Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) is a complication of Diabetes Mellitus (DM) that can cause blindness in adults. This condition affects not only the physical aspects but also the quality of life of patients. Given the rising prevalence of DR, a deeper understanding of its impact on patients’ quality of life is essential for developing better interventions. Objective. To assess the qualityof life of patients suffering from DR at Medan Baru Eye Speciality and identify the factors influencing their quality of life. Methods. A descriptive cross-sectional approach was used.. The sample consisted of 68 DR patients selected through consecutive sampling, utilizing the Retinopathu Diabetic Quality of Life (RetDQoL) questionnaire to measure quality of life across various dimensions, including physical, social, and psychological aspects. Descriptive analysis was conducted to illustrate the frequency distribution of patient’ quality of life. Results. The findings revealed that the majority of patients (84,3%) had good quality of life, although many still experienced negative impacts on certain aspects of their lives. Patients over 65 years old and those with non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy (NPDR) tended to have a better quality of life compared to those with proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR). Conclusion. Most DR patients at Medam Baru Eye Hospital have a good quality of life; however, further interventions are needed, particulary for those with more severe complications. This research is expected to serve as a reference for improving management strategies and enhancing the quality of life of DR patients.
