Introduction. Cytomegalovirus is a part of TORCH infections during pregnancy
and is the leading cause of congenital infections worldwide. Vertical transmission
during pregnancy could occur and this could result in the birth of neonate with
congenital cytomegalovirus (cCMV). Infection status of the said neonates can be
done either serologically or done with polymerase chain reaction (PCR) of urine
sample. The outcomes of this infection vary from neurological defect to
sensorineural hearing loss. In Indonesia, number of studies and data related to
congenital cytomegalovirus is insufficient to determine the prevalence of this
infection. Objective. This study aims to determine the association between maternal
knowledge, attitude, and behavior towards congenital cytomegalovirus infection
and prevention in Prof. dr. Chairuddin Panusunan Lubis USU Hospital. Method.
Cross-sectional study is done in 35 neonates admitted to Prof. dr. Chairuddin
Panusunan Lubis USU Hospital. Maternal demographic data, knowledge, attitude,
and behavior are acquired through questionnaires, while the neonates’
demographic data and clinical characteristics are acquired through medical
records and infection status of the neonates are determined through a nested PCR
with urine sample and visualized with gel electrophoresis. Results and Discussion.
77,1% of mothers show a low level of knowledge; however, 82,9% of mothers show
a positive attitude towards the knowledge of cytomegalovirus infection and
prevention. As much as 34,3% of mothers very frequently engage in behaviors that
increase the risk of cytomegalovirus transmission; even so, 51,4% of the said
mothers also very frequently engage in behaviors that prevents cytomegalovirus
transmission. Conclusion. The incidence of congenital cytomegalovirus in Prof. dr.
Chairuddin Panusunan Lubis USU Hospital is 20,0%.
