College Students' Adaptation Strategies to Social Pressure Generated by Fear of Missing Out (Fomo)
Abstract
This study aims to determine students' adaptation strategies to social pressure generated by Fear Of Missing Out (FOMO) among students of the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, University of North Sumatra (FISIP USU). This research uses Adaptation Theory by Robert K. Merton and Hiperreality Theory by Jean Baudrillard as supporting theories. This research was conducted using qualitative research methods with a phenomenological approach. The data collection techniques used in this research are in-depth interviews and documentation. The informants in this study totaled 12 people consisting of 9 main informants of FISIP USU students who follow trends in social media, and 2 additional informants of FISIP USU students who do not follow trends in social media. and 1 person who became a key informant who is an alumnus of FH USU. The results showed that FISIP USU students experience social pressure, namely the influence produced by a group on individuals to conform to the group. Students feel the need to follow the activities carried out by people in their social environment in order to be accepted and considered part of the group. FISIP USU students experience pressure, especially on social media, to follow trends or news that are popular. Social pressure felt by FISIP USU students such as comparing themselves with others, the existence of certain standards to show a perfect life such as luxury, achievement, or lifestyle, the emergence of envy because they cannot meet standards on social media, pressure from followers or friends on social media to follow certain trends, and the influence of news and information that sometimes cannot be proven. As a result of the social pressure experienced by students on social media, FISIP USU students experience what is called FOMO or Fear Of Missing Out. The results of this study also show that in overcoming the social pressure faced by students, they carry out several adaptation strategies in order to minimize FOMO behavior such as; maintaining a balance between social media and the real world, focusing on yourself, choosing trends that are appropriate to imitate, and having distraction activities to distract from FOMO behavior.
