Abstract
Background: Stroke is a neurological condition affecting specific brain regions, caused by disrupted blood flow in the form of infarction (blockage) or hemorrhage. Objective: This study aims to describe the risk factors for ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes, including gender, age, ethnicity, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, smoking habits, and alcohol consumption. Methods: This research is a descriptive study using a total sampling technique. The sample includes ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke patients at Haji Adam Malik General Hospital Medan in 2023 who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Results: Among 256 ischemic stroke patients, 151 (59.0%) were male, 75 (29.3%) were aged 65–74 years, 158 (61.7%) were Batak, 187 (73%) had hypertension, 84 (32.8%) had diabetes mellitus, 24 (9.4%) were smokers, and 3 (1.2%) consumed alcohol. Among 127 hemorrhagic stroke patients, 73 (57.5%) were male, 41 (32.3%) were aged 45–54 years, 65 (51.2%) were Batak, 101 (79.5%) had hypertension, 16 (12.6%) had diabetes mellitus, 6 (4.7%) were smokers, and no alcohol consumption was reported.
