Habitus Penggunaan Instagram di Kalangan Mahasiswa
Instagram Habitus Among University Students
Abstract
This research aims to understand and study how the habitus of using Instagram among students has an impact on student academic performance. This research uses a qualitative method with a descriptive approach, for data collection techniques in this study, researchers use primary data including, observation, in-depth interviews, documentation, and secondary data, namely, literature studies and journals that are relevant to the research topic, and use Pierre Bourdieu's habitus theory as an analysis knife, and in determining informants, this study uses a purposive sampling method to select informants based on the criteria of semester of study, frequency of Instagram use, and length of use. The informants consisted of 6th semester students and final year students, with a minimum usage of 6 hours per day for at least 2 years of Instagram usage. Habitus is a concept that explains how individuals behave, think, act and are oriented based on life experiences, social environment, and social structures that are embedded in them and this is done repeatedly until it becomes a habit. The results of this study show that the habitus of using Instagram is contrary to academic demands, this is because it can trigger a decrease in motivation to learn, difficulty managing time, a decrease in student achievement index and late graduation on time, and impaired concentration, especially on tasks that require continuous focus such as theses, journals, and academic assignments. In addition, this study also found several factors that reinforce the habitus of Instagram use among students, such as stress due to academic pressure, social validation, algorithms, easy access and social needs, making it difficult for students to escape from intensive and continuous Instagram use behavior.
