Analysis of Turbocharger Bearing Damage on CC 201 Railway Locomotive at PT. KAI Pulo Brayan with Ansys Simulation
Abstract
Bearings are machine elements that support shafts with loads. This study aims to
analyze the wear of ball bearings in turbochargers and the factors influencing it. The
wear rate of the 41-C61391 bearing (WABTEC) is 3.33×10-7 mm³ of material lost per
hour, with a total of 4.99×10-7 mm³ of material lost during 15 hours of daily operation.
This bearing can withstand a maximum load of 199.25 kgf (1953.98 N) with a
Equivalent Von Mises Stress value of 136.58 MPa. Damage to the turbocharger in the
auxiliary diesel engine is caused by high exhaust gas temperatures, leading to wear of
the ball bearing and disrupting engine performance. Based on simulations, the
bearing's lifespan in the Turbocharger CC 201 is estimated to be 2190 days without
failure or maintenance, with 103,820 rotation cycles before significant degradation
occurs. Under extreme conditions, with a speed of 3000 RPM, the bearing begins to
experience wear of continuous operation and can last up to 394.5 days (12.98 months).
