Background: The increasing prevalence of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) necessitates the development of rapid, accessible, and costeffective screening methods. The Brinkman Index is utilized to quantify smoking intensity, while the PUMA Score serves as a tool for early detection of COPD risk. Objective: This study aims to examine the characteristics of respondents, assess smoking levels using the Brinkman Index, evaluate early COPD detection through the PUMA Score, and analyze the relationship between smoking intensity and early COPD detection. Methods: A quantitative research design was employed, using an observational analytical approach with a cross-sectional framework. The sample consisted of 90 patients from the general polyclinic at Rumah Sakit Prof. Dr. Chairuddin P. Lubis Universitas Sumatera Utara, selected through consecutive sampling. Data were collected using questionnaires that included the Brinkman Index and PUMA Score. Results: The study revealed a significant correlation between smoking intensity (as measured by the Brinkman Index) and early COPD detection (as assessed by the PUMA Score) (p-value < 0.001). Increased smoking intensity was associated with a higher risk of developing COPD. Most respondents demonstrated a moderate degree of smoking and a low risk for COPD. Respondent characteristics indicated that the majority were 50 years old, held a bachelor’s degree, were self-employed, had a high income, were married, and predominantly resided in urban areas. Conclusion: This study contributes to early COPD detection, particularly among smokers. The combination of the PUMA Score and Brinkman Index can effectively identify COPD risks, enabling timely preventive interventions.en_US
