dc.description.abstractBackground: Body Mass Index (BMI) is an indicator of obesity, and another parameter that can assist in diagnosing obesity is waist circumference. In 2022, approximately 16% of adults over 18 years of age worldwide experienced obesity. Leukocyte levels are markers of inflammation, where white blood cells, including neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils, and basophils, are key components of the immune system involved in the inflammatory response. Leukocytes positively correlate with BMI, and an increase in BMI has been proven to be a strong predictor of future diabetes mellitus (DM) onset across various populations. Objective: To determine the correlation between leukocyte levels, leukocyte profile, and platelet count with nutritional status among students of the University of North Sumatra. Subjects and Methods: This study employed a cross-sectional design using data obtained from the University of North Sumatra Clinic. The independent variable in this research was BMI, while the dependent variables included leukocyte levels, leukocyte profiles (including lymphocytes, mixed basophils/eosinophils, and neutrophils), and platelet count. The analytical methods used were Spearman Rank correlation test and logistic regression. Results: The study results showed a significant relationship between leukocyte levels (P = 0.0001) and platelet count (P = 0.0001) with nutritional status. However, the leukocyte profile did not show a meaningful correlation with nutritional status. Lymphocytes had a correlation value of 0.123, mixed basophils/eosinophils/monocyte 0.462, and neutrophils 0.112, which may be due to external factors not covered in this study. Conclusion: It can be concluded that leukocyte and platelet levels correlate with nutritional status, while the leukocyte profile showed a weak association with nutritional status.en_US
