An Overview of Knowledge Level About Seborrheic Dermatitis Among Medical Students of Universitas Sumatera Utara Class of 2021-2023
Abstract
Background: Seborrheic dermatitis (SD) is a chronic and recurrent inflammatory
skin disease that often occurs in adolescents and adults, with a high prevalence
especially in immunocompromised individuals. SD has a multifactorial
pathophysiology, including Malassezia spp., skin surface lipids, and immunologic
dysregulation. The disease affects the quality of life of the patients due to the
frequent recurrence of symptoms, such as itching and redness. Therefore, it is
important to treat it as early as possible with the various topical treatment options
available. Objective: The study aims to see the level of knowledge of DS in the
students of the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Sumatera Utara class of 2021-2023.
Methods: This research is a descriptive study with cross-sectional design by
distributing questionnaires to students of the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas
Sumatera Utara, class of 2021-2023 which were distributed via Google Form and
QR Code. Data was collected using simple random sampling method as a sampling
technique. Results: It was found that students had a moderate level of knowledge
about DS (50%). 150 (57.7%) of the total respondents had a moderate level of
knowledge in choosing SD treatment. Female students made up the majority of
respondents with 176 responses. The age group of 17 to 20 years dominated around
46.2%. The most respondents were dominated by students of the class of 2021
(67.3%). Conclusion: Students have a moderate level of knowledge about SD and
its treatment selection.
