The title of this thesis is “An Analysis of Impoliteness Strategies in the Comments of TheVillagebeast YouTube Videos.” This study employed Culpeper’s theory of impoliteness strategies (1996) and the functions of impoliteness strategies (2011). Using a descriptive qualitative approach, the author identifies and categorizes impoliteness strategies in the comments section of YouTube videos. The data were collected from four videos with the highest number of likes and comments. The analysis was conducted using the interactive approach of Miles, Huberman, and Saldana (2014), which involved three phases: data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing or verification. The findings reveal five types of impoliteness strategies: bald on record impoliteness (21.67%), positive impoliteness (18.33%), negative impoliteness (16.67%), sarcasm or mock impoliteness (31.67%), and withhold impoliteness (11.66%). Furthermore, three primary functions of impoliteness strategies were found in this study, that include entertaining impoliteness (43.33%), affective impoliteness (40.00%), and coercive impoliteness (16.67%).
