The purpose of this study is to evaluate the utilization of collections at the Library of State Islamic High School 1 Medan based on Handoko's theory regarding factors that influence library users in utilizing library collections. This research was a qualitative study with a descriptive approach. The study employed purposive sampling to select eight participants: a head librarian, a librarian, and six students (three each from grades XI and XII). The research data sources were primary and secondary data. The primary data was obtained through interviews, observations, and documentation, while secondary data was obtained from documents such as books and journals. Subsequently, data collection techniques used were observation, interviews, and documentation. Data analysis was conducted in three stages: data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. Furthermore, data validity was established through three types of triangulation, namely source triangulation, technique triangulation, and time triangulation. The research findings revealed three key internal factors affecting library utilization. First, students' needs predominantly tended towards novel collections. Second, their motives for visiting included seeking for additional information in the library and to fill leisure time. Third, student interest in visiting the library increased when new collections were being promoted and was further enhanced by library comfort. Moreover, external factors revealed that collection completeness was not sufficient and many collections were not up to date and librarian skills in serving users were quite good. However, library staff were less friendly in serving users and the availability of information retrieval facilities was still manual using class numbers placed on bookshelves. It can be concluded that the Library of State Islamic High School 1 Medan has accumulated many old book collections and textbooks and the student interest in visiting the library remained quite high. However, with minimal visiting time allocated, students spent approximately 15-30 minutes during their library visits. The library needs to evaluate collection utilization to develop better.en_US
