This study aims to evaluate the preservation and conservation of library materials at the North Sumatra Provincial Library and Archive Service. The study conducted the theory of the National Library Standards as outlined in the Regulations of the National Library of the Republic of Indonesia Number 2 of 2024 concerning National Standards for Public Libraries, Annex I Number 2.21 on Library Collection Preservation, and Number 3.7 on Library Collection Preservation. The research method uses a qualitative method with a descriptive approach, utilizing data collection techniques such as observation, interviews, and documentation. The findings indicate that the high level of damage to library collections in 2023 amounted to 1,321 items, with 425 items classified as severely damaged and 896 items as lightly damaged. The damage is caused by human factors, natural disasters or environmental factors, and animals (insects). Librarians take preventive measures by cleaning storage shelves and rooms, regulating room temperature to remain stable, using chemical agents such as camphor and magic chalk, installing curtains to block UV light from entering the room, and performing fumigation. This research is expected to provide a role for librarians in conducting periodic evaluations of the implementation of preservation and conservation with the aim of knowing the weaknesses, obstacles and improvements that must be made and can achieve their standards in preservation and conservation.
