Analysis of Factors Associated with Dysmenorrhea Intensity in Female Students of The Faculty of Medicine Universitas Sumatera Utara
Abstract
Introduction. Dysmenorrhea occurs in approximately 90% women in the world and
are the most often medical issue that could affect women’s life quality. Several studies
show that factors like body mass index (BMI), physical activity, cardiorespiratory
endurance, caffeine consumption, stress, anxiety, and depression level could affect
dysmenorrhea intensity. Objective. To analyze factors that associated with
dysmenorrhea intensity in female students at the Faculty of Medicine Universitas
Sumatera Utara. Method. This study is an analytical observational study with a crosssectional
approach. Data were obtained from a total of 96 samples with stratified
random sampling. Data were collected by filling out questionnaires for variables of
physical activity, caffeine consumption, stress levels, anxiety, and depression, as well
as by measuring body weight, height, and cardiorespiratory endurance in respondents.
Data were analyzed using Chi-Square test to determine the relationship between
independent and dependent variables. Results and Discussion. The results of Kruskal-
Wallis analysis resulted in p-value of 0.700 (p>0.05) for BMI, 0.962 (p>0.05) for
caffeine consumption, 0.651 (p>0.05) for stress level, 0.067 (p>0.05) for anxiety level,
0.353 (p>0.05) for depression level. The results of Chi-Square analysis resulted in pvalue
of 0.921 (p>0.05) for physical activity and 0.826 (p>0.05) for cardiorespiratory
endurance. Conclusion. There is no significant association between body mass index,
physical activity, cardiorespiratory endurance, caffeine consumption, stress, anxiety,
and depression level with dysmenorrhea intensity in female students.
