This study aims to examine the inner conflict faced by Henderi, a character in the
novel Ini Aheng Bukan Dilan by Niswa Hasana, using a literary psychology
perspective, particularly based on Kurt Lewin's theory of psychological conflict,
which breaks down inner conflict into three types: approach-approach conflict,
avoidance-avoidance conflict, and approach-avoidance conflict. The goal of this
study is to recognize and explain the inner struggles of Henderi in the story. The
research employs a descriptive qualitative approach to analyze each of the
character's inner conflicts within the novel’s narrative. The data source for this
study is the novel itself, and the data consist of sentences, paragraph fragments, or
complete paragraphs that describe Henderi's inner turmoil and his actions to deal
with these conflicts. The findings show that in the approach-approach conflict,
Henderi experiences uncertainty in deciding whether to protect and defend Carelia
or ignore what he witnessed. He faces a dilemma between wanting to be close to
his brother Juan while dealing with emerging feelings. In the avoidance-avoidance
conflict, Henderi is torn between holding on to his feelings and choosing whether
to avoid external problems or confront uncomfortable emotions. In the approachavoidance
conflict, Henderi is caught between defending and protecting Carelia or
staying away from involvement, while also struggling with whether to avoid his
father’s calls or respond to them.
