Characteristic Overview of Renal Cell Carcinoma Patients at Haji Adam Malik Central General Hospital in 2022-2023
Abstract
Introduction. Renal Cell Carcinoma (RCC) is a tumor originating from the proximal tubule epithelium and includes several subtypes such as clear cell (ccRCC), papillary (pRCC), chromophobe RCC (chRCC), and others. RCC ranks 13th as a cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide. Smoking, obesity, and uncontrolled hypertension are risk factors for this disease. Objective. This study aims to determine the characteristics of RCC patients at Haji Adam Malik General Hospital Medan in 2022-2023. Methods. This research used a descriptive cross-sectional design with secondary data obtained from the medical records of RCC patients at Haji Adam Malik General Hospital Medan. The sample consisted of 36 patients obtained through total sampling. Results and Discussion. RCC patients at Haji Adam Malik General Hospital were predominantly male (52.8%) within the age range of 41-59 years (52.8%). Patients with uncontrolled hypertension totaled 15 (41.7%), those with a history of smoking 8 (22.2%), and obese patients 6 (16.7%). The most common clinical manifestations were flank pain in 32 patients (88.9%), palpable abdominal mass in 22 patients (61.1%), and hematuria in 18 patients (50%). The most frequently found subtype was ccRCC, with 25 patients (69.4%). Conclusion. RCC patients were predominantly male within the age range of 41-59 years. The primary risk factor was a history of uncontrolled hypertension. The common clinical manifestation was flank pain, with most patients diagnosed with ccRCC.
