Verba ‘Membawa’ dalam Bahasa Minangkabau: Kajian Metabahasa Semantik Alami

Abstract

This study examines the categorization and meaning of the verb ‘membawa’ in the Minangkabau language through the framework of Natural Semantic Metalanguage. This research adopts a qualitative and descriptive approach, providing a comprehensive analysis of the categorization and meanings associated with the verb ‘membawa’. Data were collected using observation and conversational methods, specifically employing free involvement observation and recording techniques, followed by systematic documentation and categorization. A total of 19 meanings of the verb 'mambao' (to carry) were identified in the Minangkabau language. The data were analyzed using matching and distribution methods. In the context of Natural Semantic Metalanguage, the meanings of the verb were determined through paraphrasing. The findings reveal that the verb 'mambao' functions as an action verb characterized by transfer, comprising three component categories: 1) X performs an action on Y, resulting in Y moving to a part of X's body; 2) X performs an action on Y using Z, resulting in Y's movement; 3) X performs an action on Y using Z, resulting in Y moving to a part of X's body. Furthermore, the meanings of the verb 'mambao' in the Minangkabau language are identified based on the polysemy of DOING and TRANSFERRING.
