Management of Family Nursing Care for Diabetes Melitus Cases in Family Members in Mulyorejo Village, Sunggal District, Deli Serdang Regency
Abstract
Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic non-communicable disease which characterized by an increase in blood glucose levels or hyperglycemia that occurs due to decreased sensitivity of insulin. The test results of blood glucose when >200 mg/dl, fasting blood glucose >126 mg/dl are sufficient to make the diagnosis of DM with signs and symptoms are polyphagia, poludipsia, polyuria, fatigue, and blurred vision. Complications of diabetic are macro vascular disease, micro vascular and neuropathy. The management of diabetes mellitus consisted of management of diet, exercise, monitoring blood glucose levels. The priority problems are the risk of imbalance blood glucose levels and deficit of knowledge about diabetes mellitus. The implementation is to regulate the diabetic diet pattern, check the blood sugar levels regularly, exercise regularly (diabetic food exercises), diabetic feet care, and teach taking medication regularly. The study using a descriptive case study method that aims to empower clients in diabetes mellitus self care management. The nursing care aims to control the patient’s blood sugar levels and provide understanding to the patient about diabetes mellitus which using media flipcharts and educational videos. The evaluation results showed that after given nursing care for 2 weeks the patient’s blood sugar level decreased from 210 mg/dl to 165 mg/dl, the signs and symptoms of diabetic decreased and the patient understood about diabetes and was able to perform self care management of diabetes mellitus independently. Nurses are expected to be able to implement and develop self care management nursing care for patients with type II diabetes mellitus.
