The Role of Hope on Grit in Psychology Students at the University of North Sumatra
Abstract
This study aims to determine whether there is a role of hope in increasing
grit in students of the Faculty of Psychology, University of North Sumatra. This
study involved 271 students consisting of the classes of 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023.
The sampling technique used was the proportionated stratified random sampling
technique. Data collection in this study used two scales, namely: the ADHS (The
Adult Dispositional Hope Scale) scale which has been adapted into Indonesian by
Novrianto & Menaldi (2022) which refers to aspects of hope according to Snyder
and the grit scale developed by Prameswari & Vivekananda (2018) which is based
on aspects of grit according to Duckworth. Data analysis was conducted using
descriptive variable analysis and simple linear regression test using SPSS Statistics
25 application. The results of this study indicate that there is a role of hope in
increasing grit in students of the Faculty of Psychology, University of North
Sumatra with a contribution of 41.3%. This study also shows that most students of
the Faculty of Psychology, University of North Sumatra have a high level of hope
with a percentage of 66.42% (180 subjects) and a level of grit in the medium
category with a percentage of 67.89% (184 subjects).
