Conservation of Library Materials at the North Sumatra State Islamic University Library
Abstract
This study aims to determine the conservation of library materials at the North
Sumatra State Islamic University Library. The method used is descriptive qualitative
method, with informants from the Librarian of the Preservation Section and the
Librarian of the Processing Section. Research techniques include observation,
interviews, and documentation. The results show that active conservation includes
cleaning documents regularly twice a week with simple tools. Damaged collections
are stored in the warehouse after checking, there is no special schedule for
humidification. Lamination is done by patching and re-binding, and the protective
layer uses a clear plastic cover. Passive conservation includes temperature and
humidity control with 16°C air conditioning. Cleanliness of the storage room is
maintained by cleaning the floor and dusting. Light is regulated using lamps,
daylight, and special curtains. Fumigation is carried out with mothballs, and a survey
of the physical condition of the collection is carried out during semester breaks. In
conclusion, the conservation of library materials at UIN North Sumatra Library is still
simple and still has shortcomings.
