This study discusses the calligraphy and ornaments on the building of the Grand Mosque of H. Achmad Bakrie Kisaran. This study aims to determine the types and meanings contained in the ornaments and calligraphy of the Grand Mosque of Kisaran. The researcher uses the semiotic theory proposed by Barthes in analyzing the data of ornaments and calligraphy, the semiotic theory in analyzing the types of calligraphy proposed by Sirojuddin and Yosan and the semiotic theory to analyze the types of ornaments proposed by Prihatin and Mitchel. This study is a field research (Field Research) using a descriptive method equipped with library research (Library Research) obtained from data sources in the form of books, journals, articles and relevant related sources. The results of the study indicate that the Grand Mosque of Kisaran has two types of ornaments, namely Arabic ornaments (arabesque) and Malay ornaments. The Arabesque ornaments found are 1) Arabesque ornaments with a basic circular pattern and 2) Arabesque ornaments with a basic rectangular pattern, while for Malay ornaments there are 8 types, namely: 1) Pucuk Rebung Motif, 2) Semut Beriring Motif, 3) Kaluk paku Motif, 4) Ant beriring Motif, 5) Itik Sekawan Motif, 6) Awan Larat Motif, 7) Bintang-bintang Motif and 8) Lebah Gantung Motif. Furthermore, researchers found two types of Calligraphy at the Grand Mosque of H. Achmad Bakrie Kisaran, namely: 1) tsulust calligraphy and 2) kufic calligraphy. Each ornament and calligraphy studied has a denotative meaning, namely the real meaning and a connotative meaning, namely the meaning that has new interpretations in it.
