    Abstract
This research examines the characterization of membranes with the main materials, namely deproteinised natural rubber and sulfonated polystyrene. This research aims to see the characteristic properties of the DPNR-g-MA/sPS membrane which is carried out through three stages. The first stage is the deproteinisation of natural rubber where the deproteinised natural latex is dissolved in xylene with the addition of anhydride maleate and is carried out by reflux until dissolved. The second stage is the manufacture of sulfonated polystyrene from used stryrofoam dissolved in chloroform and added H2SO4 96% carried out by the reflux method for 4 hours at a temperature of 60°C and then dried. The last stage is the manufacture of membranes, namely by mixing deproteinised natural rubber and sulfonated polystyrene and then added with dicumyl peroxide initiators and divinyl benzene cross-binding agents then characterized by Tensile Strength, SEM, TGA and XRD tests. The optimum finish is obtained on the membrane with a variation of 60:40:1:4. The tensile strength test produced a tensile strength value of 2.8474 MPa, a ductility value of 70.2903% and an elastic modulus value of 4.0509 MPa. The SEM test shows that the membrane surface is smoother and tends to be even, thus improving the quality of the membrane surface. Furthermore, the TGA test showed quite good thermal stability properties, where the membrane is able to operate at high temperatures. And in the XRD test, the membrane diffraction pattern shows a peak of 2θ between 17º-18º so that it produces a diffraction peak that shows a more regular phase.
