Background: Pirdot leaf (Saurauia bracteosa DC) is a plant from the Actinidiaceae tribe which is widespread in Indonesia and one of the plants that is useful in the health sector. The bioactive compounds found in pirdot leaves are phenolic compounds, flavonoids, steroids, triterpenoids and saponins which have antioxidant and antidiabetic properties.
Objective: This study aims to determine the antioxidant activity of the ethyl acetate extract of pirdot leaves using the DPPH, ABTS, and FRAP methods.
Methods: Simplicia powder and extracts were characterized and tested by phytochemical screening against simplicia and extracts. Ethyl acetate extract was prepared by the maceration method. Then the ethyl acetate extract of pirdot leaves was tested for antioxidant activity against DPPH at a wavelength of 516 nm, ABTS at a wavelength of 415 nm, and FRAP at a wavelength of 726 nm using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer.
Results: The ethyl acetate extract of pirdot leaves (Saurauia bracteosa DC) has antioxidant activity and the results of measuring antioxidant activity using the DPPH method with a very strong activity of 47.5245 ± 0.32 μg/mL, in the ABTS method with a weak activity of 173.4099 ± 0.04 μg/mL, and the FRAP method with a moderate activity of 105.6745 ± 0.37 μg/mL.
Conclusion: From the research results obtained, it can be concluded that the ethyl acetate extract of pirdot leaves has very strong antioxidant activity in the DPPH method, weak antioxidant activity in the ABTS method, and moderate antioxidant activity in the FRAP method.
