Periodontitis is an inflammatory disease that causes progressive destruction of
the periodontal tissues. Tamarind (Tamarindus indica L.) is a plant that has been widely
used as a base for alternative medicine to treat various diseases. Tamarind contains
various phytochemicals that are antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and others.
Neutrophils are professional phagocytes that first appear during the first hours of
inflammation. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of the application
of tamarind fruit gel (Tamarindus indica L.) with concentrations of 3.125%, 6.25% and
12.5% on the number of neutrophil cells in a rat model of periodontitis on day 3 and 7
and to determine the concentration of tamarind fruit gel which was effective in reducing
the number of neutrophil cells in a rat periodontitis model. This research is a laboratory
experimental study with a posttest only control group design. There were 32
periodontitis rat models which divided into 4 treatment groups (tamarind fruit gel
3.125%, 6.25%, 12.5% and placebo) and 2 days of observation (day 3 and 7). Data were
analyzed by one way ANOVA test, post-hoc LSD test and t-independent. The results
showed that there were significant differences between each group. Tamarind fruit gel
group had lower neutrophil cell counts than the placebo gel group. The 12.5%
concentration group had the lowest neutrophil cell count on day 3(9.62 ± 1.59) and day
7 (1.43 ± 0.55). This study showed that tamarind fruit gel can reduce the number of
neutrophil cells in a periodontitis rat model.
