Preliminary Plant Design of Methyl Salicylate from Methanol and Salicylic Acid Esterification with Production Capacity of 4000 Tons/Year and Spesific Assignment of Continous Stirred Tank Reactor (CSTR)
Abstract
This methyl salicylate production plant from salicylic acid and methanol with
esterification process has a production capacity of 4.000 tons/year and operates
for 330 days a year. The main process in the pre-design of this factory consists of
three stages, namely the raw material preparation stage, the esterification reaction
process, the neutralization reaction process, and the methyl salicylate purification
process. The reaction is an esterification reaction of salicylic acid and methanol
with a sulfuric acid catalyst which takes place in a stirred tank flow reactor at a
temperature of 68oC. The amount of acetaldehyde required to achieve annual
production capacity is 1.125,562 kg/hour. The planned factory location is in
Brongsong Village, Kendal Regency, Central Java Province. with a total plant area
of 14.634 m2. Water needs in this factory are supplied from the Waridin River as
much as 1.907,182 kg/hour. The required workforce is 114 people with the form of
a Limited Company (Ltd) with a line and staff organizational structure. For the
establishment and operation of the factory it requires capital investment of IDR
421.476.202.954 and production costst of IDR 104.478.602.951. Based on the
feasiblity analysis, this plant has a BEP 30,11%, ROI 17,86% POT for 5,6 years,
RON 29,78%, and IRR of 17,21%. Based on the economic analysis, it can be
