Perancangan Gedung Kolaborasi UMKM Square Universitas Sumatera Utara Dengan Penerapan “Form Follow Function”
Design of MSMEs Square Collaboration Building, University of North Sumatra with the Application of “Form Follow Function”
Abstract
The surrounding area of USU (Universitas Sumatera Utara) has many activity
generators, including commercial facilities. The involvement of commercial areas
around the campus is crucial considering the needs of students, both from Medan
City and outside Medan City. Many micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises
(MSMEs) are established and managed by students, but they are not widely
known by the public and other students, especially in the vicinity of Universitas
Sumatera Utara. This is partly due to the lack of spaces for students to introduce
their products and services to the general public and fellow students. Therefore,
this research uses a qualitative descriptive method by conducting literature
studies, field surveys, and interviews. The objective of this research is to design an
MSME building with a modern architectural approach, focusing on the theory of
form follows function as the basis for seeking the building's form. Besides having
the design principle that the facade of the building is the result of the arrangement
and function of the spaces inside, this approach can also provide high aesthetic
value, optimize the functions of the interior spaces, and consider environmental
aspects. Thus, the results of this research show that the design of the MSME
building with the application of these principles can provide high aesthetic value,
optimal function, and consideration of environmental aspects. This is evident from
the modern and functional design of the building, as well as the consideration of
environmental aspects, such as the use of modern and readily available materials
in the project location.
