Management of Nursing Care for Diabetes Mellitus Patients by Implementing the Buerger Allen Exercise at Prof. Dr. Chairuddin P. Lubis Hospital Medan City
Abstract
Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a non-communicable disease but is one of the diseases that contributes to the largest death rate. Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a group of metabolic diseases characterized by high levels of glucose in the blood (Hyperglycemia) due to abnormalities in insulin secretion, abnormalities in insulin work, or both. Chronic and uncontrolled diabetes mellitus (DM) can cause complications of macrovascular diseases such as Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD). Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) is a narrowing of the peripheral arteries caused by atherosclerosis so that blood flow to the extremities is reduced. Decreased blood supply to the extremities is one of the causes of diabetic ulcers on the feet. One indicator to see a decrease in blood flow perfusion to the lower leg/extremity area can be measured through the Ankle Brachial Index (ABI). Management that can be done to increase the ABI value is by implementing the Buerger Allen Exercise. The aim of applying the Buerger Allen Exercise to diabetes mellitus patients is to increase the patient's ABI value. The Buerger Allen Exercise intervention to check ABI was carried out 3 times. The results show that the application of the Buerger Allen Exercise is very significant in increasing the ABI value in diabetes mellitus patients.
