Paddy is one of the important food crops in Indonesia that can be processed into rice which has an important role in fulfilling national food needs. North Sumatra is one of the rice paddy producing areas in Indonesia. However, currently the population is increasing which causes an increase in the need for rice. Thus, rice production must be optimized to maintain food availability. The method used is the barrier function method to solve constrained nonlinear programming, especially inequality constraints by combining the main objective function with a positive barrier function. The data used to optimize rice production is data quoted from the official website of the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) of Simalungun Regency in 2010 – 2022. Based on the results of calculations with the barrier function method, the optimal harvest area was 105,333.88 Ha and the optimal productivity was 63.70 quintals/Ha, so the maximum production was obtained as much as 6,709,757.84 quintals. Therefore, the barrier function has an important role to ensure that the solution obtained remains within the specified constraints and allows the resulting solution to be valid, realistic and applicable.
