This research discusses calligraphy and ornaments in the buildings of the Raya Mosque and the Agung Mosque of Binjai City. This research aims to find out the meaning of denotation and connotation. The researcher uses the semiotic theory put forward by Roland Barthes. As for analyzing calligraphy, the researcher used the theory of calligraphy put forward by Sirojuddin and the theory of Malay ornaments put forward by Al-Mudra. This research is a field research that uses a descriptive method supported by library research. The data collection technique is carried out in 3 stages, namely observation, interviews and documentation. The data analysis technique follows the Miles and Huberman model by focusing on the aspects that are considered important. The results of the study show that the Raya Mosque has meaning in semiotics, and there is 2 types of calligraphy in the Raya Mosque of Binjai City, yamely: 1)Khat Ṡuluṡ which means the writing of alim ulama, 2)Khat Farisi which means hope. what was found was: Arabic ornaments and Malay ornaments. Consists of 4 types of Arabic ornaments in this mosque, namely: The basic shape of the circle shape, the basic shape of the triangle, the basic shape of the polygon and the basic shape of the rectangle. Meanwhile, the researcher found 11 kinds of Malay ornamental motifs at the Raya Mosque of Binjai city, namely: Bamboo Shoot Motif, Ant Motif Accompanying Ants, Variam Ornamental Motif of Waves, Jasmine Flower Motif, Forest Flower Motif, Shear Wajid Motif, Kaluk Motif, Mesh Motif, Hanging Bee Motif, Sekawan Duck Motif and Violin Trellis Motif. Furthermore, at the Agung Mosque of Binjai City, found 6 types of calligraphy at the Agung Mosque of Binjai City, namely: Khat S|ulus|, Khat Naskhi, Khat Khufi, Khat Diwani, Khat Riq'ah and Khat Farisi. Then Malay ornaments, found 4 kinds of Malay ornament motifs at the Great Mosque of Binjai City, namely: Lilit Kangkung Motif, Kaluk Motif, Ant Motif Accompanying Ants, Tampuk Pinang Motif and Bamboo Shoot Motif. all ornaments have denotative and connotative meanings.
