dc.description.abstract | Coconut is one of the plants that has many benefits in every part of it, especially in the trunk. Coconut trunks can be utilized as furniture such as chairs, tables, and cabinets. Making furniture usually requires connecting tools such as nails, bolts, screws, and dowels. Dowels can be made of wood, iron and stee. Wooden dowels must be made of wood that has good durability. This study aims to analyze the strength of coconut trunk (Cocos nucifera L.) at the base and middle as a means of connecting wooden dowels with several sizes of dowel diameter. Tests carried out are physical properties testing and mechanical properties testing. Physical properties testing includes moisture content and density, and mechanical properties testing includes modulus of elasticity (MOE) and bending yield strength. Physical properties testing refers to ASTM D4442 and ASTM D2395 standards. Mechanical properties testing refers to the ASTM F1575 standard. The results of the physical properties research show that the average value of the water content of wooden dowels from coconut trunks is 13.69%. The average density value of wood dowel from coconut trunk is 0.72 gr/cm3. The results of the mechanical properties study showed the average value of bending yield strength and of 517 kgf/cm2 and 68.777 kg/cm2. The results showed that the bending yield strength value of coconut wood dowels at the base has a higher strength compared to the middle part. Based on the results of data analysis, the treatment of stem position and diameter size had no significant effect on the bending yield strength of the dowels. | en_US |
