Depiction of the Social Stratification and Class Inequality Impacts on the Main Character in the Film Songbird

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the dimensions of social class and forms of stratification as well as the impact of social inequality depicted in the film SONGBIRD released in 2020. Using Max Weber's theory of social stratification and Karl Marx's theory of social conflict, this research examines the social structure and social classes in society depicted in the film, as well as how social inequality affects interactions between individuals and groups. Weber's theory of social stratification regarding the three dimensions of social class (economic, social status, and power) is used as a reference to understand the distribution of wealth and opportunities in society in the film. Meanwhile, Karl Marx's theory of social conflict is used to identify the tension between the ruling class and the oppressed, as well as the impact of social inequality on the social dynamics that occur in the film SONGBIRD. The results show that social stratification is strongly influenced by differences in access to resources and power, resulting in social inequality that exacerbates injustice and worsens the lives of marginalized groups. The research concludes that the film effectively illustrates the negative impact of social inequality, by showing how social stratification can exacerbate tensions and conflicts in society, ultimately perpetuating cycles of injustice and marginalization.
