Orchidaceae is one of the biological resources that needs to be preserved,
not only because of its role in shaping tropical forest ecosystems, but also because
orchids have various benefits and have great potential to be managed and
developed. Mursala Island, located in North Sumatra Province, has the potential
for in-depth flora research, especially on orchid species. The purpose of this study
was to explore and identify orchid species on Mursala Island. Sampling was
conducted using Visual Encounter Survey (VES) and purposive exploration method.
Identification of orchid living material was carried out up to the species level using
an approach based on morphological characteristics, especially flower
morphological characteristics. For orchid specimens that were not in flower,
identification was carried out up to the genus level. The types of orchids found
based on the results of research on 8 lines of exploration locations were 21 species
identified to the species level and 8 species to the genus level. one of the orchids
identified was Dendrobium pseudoaloifolium, a species of the genus Dendrobium
which was previously only known to be distributed on the island of Borneo.
