    Abstract
This study examines the techniques of making and playing odap-odap musical instruments made by Mr. Samuel Harianja, which are a cultural heritage of the Batak Toba community. The purpose of this study was to obtain information about the organology of odap-odap, how to play odap-odap, and the repertoire played by Mr. Samuel Harianja on the odap-odap musical instrument. The method used in this study is a qualitative description method with data collection techniques carried out through observation, interviews, literature studies, and documentation in Pansurnapitu Village, Siatas Barita District, North Tapanuli Regency. This research is supported by the theory of musical instrument classification based on the main source of vibration of its sound proposed by Curt Sachs and Hornbostel, in addition to the theory of structural and functional approaches obtained by Shusumu Khasima, and the theory of analyzing repertoires and describing odap-odap musical instruments obtained by Bruno Nettl. The results obtained indicate that the classification of odap-odap musical instruments is included in the classification of membranophone double headed cylindrical drums and in the process of making odap-odap musical instruments using jackfruit wood (Artocarpus heterophyllus) as the body tube, cowhide as a membrane on both sides and as a sound producer only on one side, and pulogos rattan as a binder. The way to play the odap-odap musical instrument is done by hitting it using hammers (beating sticks) on one side of the membrane.
